Zmanim According to Rav Mordechai Eliyahu
This method carries a Jerusalem-Baghdad inheritance shaped by the Ben Ish Chai tradition.
The rav and his community
Rav Mordechai Eliyahu was born in Jerusalem in 1929 to a family rooted in Baghdad’s rabbinic and kabbalistic world. He became a dayan and later Rishon LeZion. His teaching joined modern Israeli questions with the customs of Jerusalem and Iraqi-Sephardi practice.
The method’s character
The morning begins with a proportional Alot based on daylight. The extended day used for several deadlines ends at a practical Ben Ish Chai endpoint after sunset. Different evening times may serve different halachic purposes.
| Zman | Plain-language rule |
|---|---|
| Alot | One eighth of daylight before sunrise, equivalent to 90 proportional minutes |
| Misheyakir | About one proportional hour before sunrise |
| Shema and Tefillah | Measured in the extended day from Alot to the calculation Tzeit |
| Chatzot | Solar noon |
| Mincha Gedolah | 30 fixed minutes after Chatzot |
| Calculation Tzeit | 20 fixed minutes after sunset |
