Zmanim According to Rav Meir Mazuz and Kisei Rachamim
This method reflects the Tunisian tradition’s attention to exact reading, inherited measures, and astronomical precision.
The rav and his community
Rav Meir Nissim Mazuz was born in Tunis in 1945. His father, Rav Matzliach Mazuz, founded Yeshivat Kisei Rachamim to preserve the rigorous Tunisian method of learning. After his father was murdered in 1971, Rav Meir and his brothers rebuilt the yeshiva in Bnei Brak. Rav Mazuz died in 2025.
The method’s character
Alot and Tzeit follow the sun’s actual position below the horizon. Misheyakir and Rabbeinu Tam use fixed minutes, while afternoon calculations return to the sunrise-to-sunset day.
| Zman | Plain-language rule |
|---|---|
| Alot | Sun 16.11 degrees below the horizon |
| Misheyakir | 60 fixed minutes before sunrise; 66 in pressing need |
| Mincha Ketana | 9.5 daylight proportional hours after sunrise |
| Plag | 1.25 daylight proportional hours before sunset |
| Tzeit | Sun 4.85 degrees below the horizon |
| Rabbeinu Tam | 72 fixed minutes after sunset |
